Hello! I am very sadly needing to leave my dreamy Mexican beach house for a while, due to work and familial commitments in Europe/Australia, and am looking for a reliable subletter/s, ideally until the end of my lease in Feb 2026 (though this is negotiable- I’ll consider anything 3 months or longer).
I scored this gem of a place through local connections, it’s almost impossible to find a decent rental in Baja any other way…I have been here for five months and have been slowly and lovingly turning this big old 80’s beach house into my home/studio dream. As other commitments are calling me onwards, I want someone who will appreciate and use the space to its full advantage! I would ideally love to see it go to another artist/s or creative/s who can make the best use of the abundant and demarcated working/dreaming spaces, not to mention the peace and beauty of the region, and the warm and rich local culture.
The House:
-3 full size, fully furnished bedrooms. Primary with en suite, California king size bed and open fire. 2 smaller (but still very generous) bedrooms, one with a queen bed, the other with a king+access to the sunny back terrace.
-2.5 bathrooms (primary en suite and shared smaller guest bathroom, both with tubs) and an upstairs WC.
-Full size, fully equipped kitchen with breakfast bar, and massive 8 seater dining table for long, languorous Mexican meals.
-HUGE open plan studio workspace, with sunny reading nooks, tiled floors, large work table, and a hammock for essential studio naps.
- 1 tranquil reading/meditation room, with an open fire, floor seating, with access to the sunny upper terrace (I have a sideline in holistic health and use this as my treatment room).
-Spacious and comfortable TV room and sunroom, comfortably and thoughtfully appointed with handwoven Mexican textiles, and panoramic views of the bay and mountains.
-downstairs study/den, with open fire, lounge space and a fold out couch for that extra unexpected guest.
-Lock up garage (on street parking as well). Bike for loan.
-Washer and dryer
-Two roof terraces, one with a view of the mountains and another with a 360 view of the bay.
-Fully-fenced back terrace on the ground floor
- Literally steps from a gorgeous and basically private beach.
- Fast and reliable WI-Fi (a rarity in Baja).
Location:
The house is absolute beachfront, in a private gated community on Todos Santos Bay.
The beach is a marvel (I am Australian, and an insufferable beach snob- this one meets my high bar). I swim and bodyboard year-round- the water is clean, warm and the beach is *very* quiet- even in the high season you’ll be lucky to see another person on the beach. Todos Santos bay, the beach and the surrounding dunes are a Federally Protected Marine Reserve- the area teems with marine life and bird life. Dolphins and seals are your everyday companions. The nearby estuary is a rare bird sanctuary. There is a nearby horse sanctuary where you can rent a horse or trade volunteer hours for riding hours. One of the biggest treats of this beach is the natural hot spring in the inter-tidal zone: take a shovel and dig straight into the sand for a hot mineral soak under the stars.
If you surf, you can definitely catch a decent set on the beach here on days with a bigger swell. Otherwise, the famous breaks of Rosarito and La Mission are within an hour’s drive.
The area is very quiet, very community-focused. People look out for each other. Despite being very small and regional, the community is actively LGBTQ+ embracing, and for solo women and queer/trans folks. I am one of many openly queer and trans people living in the area- I’ve never had an issue, neither has anyone I know.
Getting here:
2.5 hours from San Diego, and 40 minutes south of the charming port city of Ensenada, my home is in a very secluded part of the coast.
The nearest small village of Esteban Cantu is 5 minutes by car and a 20 minute bike ride. Cantù is a warm and accepting community, far off the beaten tourist track, with a harmonious mix of locals and gringo transplants.
There are a number of excellent little restaurants and cafes in the village, a local store with all the essentials, a small cinema and theatre, a local bar with a lively happy hour and pool table, and a wonderful little weekly market on Fridays.
La Marina restaurant is 10 minutes walk: a charming local cantina with cheap and strong margaritas, good food and a welcoming local atmosphere.
Bigger supermarkets and other amenities can be found in the local township of Meneadero, which is 20 minutes by car or local Microbus. The nearest small city is Ensenada, where you will find all the city things (major department stores, nightclubs, etc), as well as a vibrant food and wine culture. The best seafood on the North American continent can be found here, as well as many restaurant options running the gamut from casual street food to upscale fine dining. There is an emerging cafe culture in town, with local spots like Celida and Carradura rivalling anything in the hipster enclaves of CDMX for atmosphere, flair, coffee and food quality. This region of Mexico is of course famous for its wine- the Valle de Guadelupe, aka the Napa Valley of Mexico, is about a 40 minute drive.
Access:
The area is a pretty well-kept secret, tucked away and not really serviced by transport beyond the little local Microbus, so your own vehicle is strongly recommended. I’ve lived in the area for 8 months without a car: which has its challenges, but can certainly be done. I will leave my bike here for you to use- perfectly fine for a quick taco-run to the village. Quad bikes and scooters are also commonplace around here. A local driver can also be hired for around 50 USD per day.
Rent:
3200 USD per month, which is inclusive of all utilities, as well as the services of a housekeeper/caretaker (Home helpers are part of life in Mexico- it’s actually a condition of my lease that I retain housekeeping staff. Ordinary things- such as water deliveries, and bill payments, and home maintenance can be complex for foreigners to manage around here so believe me, their services will be indispensable).
NB: I haven’t put photos up of all of the spaces- if you would like to arrange a video tour, let me know.
I don’t know the precise square footage, but let’s just say, it’s huge.
I am an author, visual artist and holistic health worker, originally from Australia, but I’ve lived all over the world.
I’ll require a basic sub-lease agreement and one month security deposit.
I have a small dog and I know the previous tenant also had pets. Officially speaking only one dog is really allowed, but let’s talk.
