Building Porter

HDFC Residential Coop in Central Harlem

Posted 20 days ago

Part Time
New York City
Harlem, Manhattan
$1,600/month

This is a part-time position to manage the garbage and recycling bins so they do not fill up, as well putting out the garbage and recycling Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights. Responsibilities also include mopping of the entry way and hallways, and in general being around to let in vendors and repair personnel. In winter time, we also need shoveling and salt for the snowfall.

The expectation is that the porter would be around the building the mornings of Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The amount of time one must be around the building exceeds the amount of time one must spend on garbage/cleaning duties, so this position would be good for someone who can stay engaged in other endeavors while at the building. Flexible remote work would be possible from the basement, or studio work depending on the type of work being done. 15-20 hours a week are expected.

Candidates must be able to legally and officially work, as we are not willing to pay under the table. Applicants will meet with the coop board to see the building, interview for the position, and review responsibilities. The position does not include housing, though the building does occasionally have apartments to rent at affordable rates.

About Us

We are a low- to moderate-income housing coop in Central Harlem (right off the 2/3 train). The building is a 5-story, 44-unit building with the footprint of about three brownstones. We are looking to hire a porter to handle the garbage/recycling, mopping the hallways, and being around for venders and repairs.
The building has a basement with wifi that could be used for other remote work or even studio space because this job has a lot of downtime.
