My partner and I are seeking a place to rent, preferably longer term. We are both ceramicists and have a habit of dedicating part of our living space to making work. We recently moved back to the NY/NJ/PA area from Vermont, where we ran a functioning ceramics studio from our garage. We supported ourselves teaching and making work to sell at local farmer's markets. We also made sculptures to sell at Todd Merrill Studios and Aero, art and design galleries in New York City. We have two well behaved, very friendly cats.
We are adaptable as far as living space goes and are not in search of anything specific, though our budget is around $2000 a month at this time. So long as it is clean, private, and functional we are flexible and open to a variety of living and working spaces. An ideal scenario would allow us to plug in our kilns, which require a 240V outlet, space on the ground floor, and the ability to vent outside. However, we are able to rent kiln space externally, so this is not a requirement. We are most in need of a place to live, and from there can organize work needs. We will be attending farmer's markets in Brooklyn and Asbury Park this fall and winter and should be living within a reasonable driving distance to these places.
My name is Ali and my partner is Curtis. We have been working together in ceramics for about 4 years. Curtis began ceramics in high school, continuing through college and then apprenticed for Toshiko Takaezu. As her final apprentice he lived with her indefinitely as her hands in the studio, as well as being her caretaker and friend. We met working in a kitchen years later when he was working at her studio after her passing, and I learned ceramics with him there. Since then we've enjoyed teaching a wide variety of classes together, and would like to continue doing so. When we don't have students we spend our days working in the studio. We focus on doing what we can to be present and positive in our lives. We love nature in all its forms, lots of arts and crafts, cooking, cartoons, studying, and playing with the cats.
