This gorgeous, sun-filled space overlooks the Indian River and the D&H rail trail. Walk, bike and ski through meadows, wetlands and woods, past farms and grazing animals for 10 miles. Warm up by the fire pit along the river on a cold, clear night. No stores in this small village, but head to neighboring Pawlet (7 m) for artisanal and gourmet food and to other nearby towns for farmer’s markets, shopping, festivals, arts and dining. Ski at Bromley (19 m), Killington (30 m) and many other resorts.

Sunny, quiet and cheerful, this 2nd floor space is in the historic West Pawlet post office building. High ceilings, 9 huge windows and refinished original fir and maple floors imbue the space with history, character and warmth. The airy living room has an Apple TV box and monitor and it is compatible with any Apple or android device with an iCloud account.

The building is on a slope, so the western-facing kitchen and porch rise up high over the river and the view of the river and rail trail is gorgeous. Sunlight pours into the kitchen and onto the balcony throughout the afternoon on clear days.

The space has 2 bedrooms, each with super-cozy queen beds.

The kitchen is fully equipped and has a large walk-in pantry.

There are many workspace options: above the stove are 2 small antique cabinet doors that open out into the adjacent bedroom and this works as a pass-through to a round pine table that can be used as a workspace or for dining. The open cabinet doors also allow extra air and light into the room when using it as a workspace. The living room has a little study nook beside the stained glass window and the walk-in pantry has a long worktable. Light flows through the window of the porch door into the pantry and on through a window into a little room that is full of board games and toys. Walk out the pantry door and right onto the porch for a sunny break or a beer while the sun sets over the trail head.

The bathroom has a small but nice shower and a beautiful floor of blue / green slate from a local quarry.

The rail trail is 100 feet or so to the left as you walk out the front door. Walk over the bridge and past some old farm and manufacturing buildings and the trail opens wide up into 9 miles of gorgeous meadows and woods full of wildlife. The garden and river offer a perfect place to gather around the fire pit on crisp, clear nights after a long walk on the trail or a day of mountain skiing.

West Pawlet is a small, economically diverse village.
On sunny days you'll see wonderful and friendly village neighbors on the trail as well as visitors from all around biking, strolling, skiing and occasionally riding on horseback.

Private access to your balcony. Shared access to the garden by the river.

Reliable high-speed, fiber optic, 2 gig wifi throughout the apartment.

West Pawlet is a quiet, rural village with no retail activity other than the PO. But beautiful country roads will take you to Pawlet, Dorset, and Manchester (7, 10 and 16 miles respectively) to find delicious prepared and artisanal food, groceries, farmer’s markets, festivals, arts and crafts events, concerts, theater and more. Granville is 3 miles down the road for groceries, pharmacy, gas, a great diner, and Slate Town Brewery which has great pizzas, salads, and burgers, etc...It is also home to Hicks Orchard which offers the best pick-your-own apples and berries I've ever had, as well as cider, artisanal hard cider, and home-baked goods.

There are several ski resorts with an hour with Bromley outside of Manchester being the closest.

About This Lister

My work: Creative

Where I went to school: University of Michigan

I’m obsessed with: Nature, making spaces beautiful and making things period.

Fixing up this old bldg has been the most fun and transformative thing I've ever done. Nothing like hard physical work, creativity and independence to make everyday feel miraculous. As I sit in the garden or on the porch after a long day looking over the river and rail trail, I can't believe my luck. I love my life in VT and whenever I want city time, my kids and friends are not far away in Boston and NYC.

Lister's Relationship to the Space

I am the owner/landlord

Rental requirements

Short term lease, renter's insurance (inexpensive and easy to add to your auto policy), proof of income verification, security deposit

Pets Policy

I love dogs and wish I could invite them all to visit, but, unfortunately, I can only invite very well-behaved, mellow, clean dogs who don't bark and have a bed, won't be hanging out on the furniture, won't be left unattended without you first conferring with me, and, in the case of my consent, will be left crated and for no longer than 2 or 3 hours.
