When you want to venture out: Peekskill is 20 minutes away, Cold Spring 25, Beacon 35. All three have excellent restaurants, farmers markets, independent bookshops, and galleries. The hiking is exceptional — the Depew Park trails and the Appalachian Trail loop at Canopus Lake are personal favorites. And then you come home to the lake.

This is an ideal home base for a couple or a small family looking for a quiet, restorative summer, or a few friends looking to test drive co-work/commune life - for people who want somewhere beautiful to slow down, but still have easy access to amenities and city life. After years of living and loving the city (Harlem and Brooklyn), we found this gem of a lake house, thinking it would be an investment property. Every time I came up, it would be a reset to my entire nervous system - so much so that a few years ago, we left our place in the city to live here full-time.
