Brooklyn Navy Yard / DUMBO, Brooklyn
$2000 (STUDIO) or $3000 (LEAD) / per session

-- TWO OPEN POSITIONS for LEAD & STUDIO INSTRUCTORS EACH (i.e. 1 LEAD + 1 STUDIO per consecutive session) for in-person high school biodesign-focused architecture & urban planning class at Brooklyn STEAM Center (brooklynsteamcenter.org) at the Brooklyn Navy Yard
-- PREFERENCE GIVEN TO CANDIDATE WHO CAN DO BOTH SESSIONS (see below for dates/times) FOR BOTH LEAD & STUDIO INSTRUCTOR POSITION

ONE Lab Summer Studio 2026’s in-person courses investigate socio-ecological design, highlighting regenerative practices and use of biomaterials. We seek a LEAD INSTRUCTOR to run a seminar-based morning discussion with students, who focus on one of the two following topics below, who will work closely with a STUDIO INSTRUCTOR running the afternoon studio:
-- Architecture & the Environment (environmentally-centered architecture)
-- Design for Future Cities (forward-thinking urban design)

The ONE Lab Director manages the collaboration between the two instructors, i.e. AM seminar & PM studio.

There are two in-person Summer Studio sessions in July; preference is given to the candidate who can do the LEAD or STUDIO INSTRUCTOR position both Session 1 and Session 2; all classes M-Th 10am – 3pm:
-- Session 1: M 7/6/26 – Th 7/16/26
-- Session 2: M 7/20/26 – Th 7/30/26
Reminder: Priority given to candidates for each position who can do both S1 & S2, i.e. one person does both sessions for LEAD INSTRUCTOR and another person does both sessions for STUDIO INSTRUCTOR.

Each of the course’s days is divided into above-mentioned morning seminar sessions (10am – 12.30pm, with guest lecturers, studio tours and similar activities) and afternoon studio work (1pm – 3pm), with students moving between independent project work and check-ins with faculty.

ONE Lab has a pre-existing curriculum that the LEAD INSTRUCTOR adapts to his/her/their own strengths; the program director facilitates collaboration with the STUDIO INSTRUCTOR to complete the syllabus.

Specific parameters of the morning seminar vs. the afternoon studio are as follows:
-- The LEAD INSTRUCTOR gives an introduction into the subject of environmentally-focused architecture & urban design, discussing the imperatives of working in these disciplines in order to help mitigate climate change and to identify ways in which proactive work fights against planetary extinction. This instructor works with the afternoon studio instructor to coordinate the students’ design and fabrication work so that it reflects the teaching points of the morning session.
-- The STUDIO INSTRUCTOR then directs the afternoon session, in coordination with the Lead Instructor, focusing on the students’ design and fabrication work so that it reflects the teaching points of the morning session.

Some AM &/or PM class time may be spent outside in observational research, sketching, and journaling for project inspiration; there may also be some guests and/or tours booked in advance by the ONE Lab Director. The LEAD INSTRUCTOR also directs students through writing and other pedagogical exercises that hone critical thinking, and helping students prepare a final project, which is documented in a digital portfolio. The STUDIO INSTRUCTOR supports all of these efforts. Both INSTRUCTORS help prepare final evaluations.

The final afternoon is devoted to students sharing their finished project with guest critics from related industries and professions; the LEAD INSTRUCTOR is also required to be at the final Thursday afternoon studio, in addition to the morning seminars, while the STUDIO INSTRUCTOR is required to be at both first & last morning of the session .

Qualifications:

LEAD INSTRUCTOR:
A Bachelor’s degree in architecture, urban design, or a related field is required, with a practice focused on fighting climate change and if possible; a graduate degree (obtained or in progress) or relevant professional experience is preferred.
-- The LEAD INSTRUCTOR should have at least two years of assistant teaching experience or at least one year of experience as a lead teacher/course designer, with experience in teaching architecture or urban design.
-- ONE Lab students work in studio with biomaterials so the LEAD INSTRUCTOR should at least be familiar with them, in particular mycelium, wheat grass, and bioplastics, if not fully conversant with them and the associated methodologies, in order to track studio progress.

STUDIO INSTRUCTOR:
A Bachelor’s degree in architecture, urban design, or a related field is required, with a practice focused on fighting climate change and if possible, a graduate degree (obtained or in progress) or relevant professional experience is desired.
-- The STUDIO INSTRUCTOR supervises ONE Lab students' work with biomaterials, so should be experienced with them, in particular mycelium, wheat grass, bioplastics & eggcrete, i.e. be fully conversant with them and associated methodologies.
-- The STUDIO INSTRUCTOR must also be able to lead students in the fundamentals of mold-making and model-building. PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF THIS IS NOT YOUR BACKGROUND.

For both positions, ONE Lab encourages applicants from traditionally underrepresented communities to apply for this position.

About Us

Terreform ONE is an innovator in the field of regenerative design and in working with biomaterials as key components of the built environment (i.e. for architecture, habitat; for urban design, elements and systems of cities of the future such as large-scale planning, mobility, resource management, etc.).

ONE Lab is the educational arm of Terreform; we are proud to partner with our educational colleagues at the Brooklyn STEAM Center, our neighbor on the Yard, to offer a summer design class in architecture & urban design, learning about and using biomaterials for the experiential part of class. The course will be a mixture of Brooklyn STEAM and some external students, and will take place at Brooklyn STEAM.
