If you’ve ever been curious (or intimidated) about how to play American Mah Jongg, I'd love to teach you! No experience necessary – I will provide all the materials needed so you can learn in the comfort of your own home.

I will teach you and your friends in a way that makes Mah Jongg feel easy to digest and immediately fun to play! It's the perfect social activity for the fall and winter months :)

What is Mah Jongg?

Mah Jongg is a tile based game originally brought over from China in the 1920s; by 1937, The National Mah Jongg League was formed as a result of the game’s enormous popularity in American social circles. Decades later, the game is experiencing an unprecedented renaissance – in 2025, it’s now more popular than ever.

Why In-person Mah Jongg lessons?

Playing Mah Jongg with actual people is very different than playing online – when playing in person, there are endless opportunities to begin and strengthen friendships through this tactile and entertaining game. I've found that having an experienced teacher explain the fine points and answer any questions along the way has made all the difference between making Mah Jongg feel confusing, and making it feel accessible and FUN!

What will you learn?

Everything from understanding the tiles, setting up the table, how to read the card, gameplay, etiquette, and strategy. My goal is to turn you into a confident Mah Jongg player!

How could learning this game benefit you?

Mah Jongg is a skill that once you have, you have for life. Because this is a social game, it’s a wonderful excuse to get friends together for an inclusive and engaging activity. It’s also great for brain flexibility, and is an awesome way to stay entertained away from your screens.

Private Group Lessons

RATE: $40 - 100 per student

Mah Jongg 101
- $100 per student
- 3 hour lesson
- 3-4 students per class

In this introductory lesson we will cover the basics of Mah Jongg and get you and your friends acquainted with the game!

Mah Jongg 102
- $80 per student
- 3 hour lesson
- 2-4 students per lesson

We'll review what we learned in Lesson 1, and get you and your friends to a place where you can play the game confidently.

Mah Jongg 103
- $40 per student
- 2 hours of guided play
- 2-4 students per session

Guided practice, where I will come over and play Mah Jongg with you and your friends. We can continue to go over the basics, as well as introduce beginner strategic play. Feel free to book this session as many times as you want, until you feel you can play without me!

I am a 25 year old artist living and working in Brooklyn. As a tattoo artist by trade, I love getting to meet new people, have an eye for detail and nuance, and a lot of patience :) I became familiar with American Mah Jongg because of my mom, who is an avid Mah Jongg collector and seller of vintage Mah Jongg sets. Her love and dedication to this game and its history has inspired me to bring my collected knowledge and teaching experience to the public. Because of her, I have become an experienced Mah Jongg player and teacher who is passionate about spreading the joy of Mah Jongg. I feel especially dedicated to making this game feel easy to learn and understand, for anyone who might be interested.

Background and Expertise

I have been playing American Mah Jongg for about 5 years and teaching in casual settings for over 2. During this time I have developed a system for teaching Mah Jongg to people of all ages! I have taught countless friends, co-workers, and peers how to play, and I can’t wait to teach you and your friends.
