About this Service

Hello! My name is Alexandra Tippett and I’m an artist and potter living in Brooklyn. I am busily looking for my own teaching studio in NYC, and in the meantime I am offering in-home pottery lessons for individuals or groups. I provide care and expertise to people of all ages and experience levels to help you (or your friends, or your family) develop or deepen your relationship and skillset with clay. I offer hand building courses, and/or wheel courses if you have a wheel at home that needs some dusting off, or an existing practice that you’re looking to advance. At the moment I do not have a portable wheel to provide, but I’m working on it! Wheel aside, I can provide all materials and services if needed, including kiln-firing your pieces. However, due to safety reasons, if you would like me to fire your finished pieces I will need to be the one providing clays and glazes.

Teaching and creating is my life’s passion and joy. I especially love helping people create tangible evidence of their internal lives and all their great capacities for growth, creativity, and beauty. I specialize in teaching beginners and intermediate learners, but if you are an advanced potter stuck in a rut, please feel comfortable reaching out and let’s see if I can help!

About this Lister

The people I teach, both big and small, know me to be gentle, patient, and warm. I am a very experienced teacher with a flexible approach – my lessons can be playful or strict, technical or expressive, therapeutic or escapist, depending on your personal constitution and what you are looking for. I care greatly for my students, and will do my level best to give you a rewarding and tailor-made experience. I am also very practiced at working with neurodivergent individuals of all ages who are seeking an outlet, a creative practice, or a form of self-exploration or nervous-system-regulation. No matter who you are, pottery can be emotional, and it has the power to reveal to you some of your most ingrained physical and mental habits. In this way it can be both deliciously difficult and wonderfully liberating with the right teacher beside you. I aim to be that teacher.

Background and Expertise

Seven years ago, when a fellow teacher at a children’s art studio couldn’t show up for work, I taught pottery on the wheel for the very first time with little to no experience. It was positively terrifying, and I am so grateful that it happened. That’s how I began to learn pottery – by teaching it to children. Beginning in this way gave me a wonderfully accessible teaching vocabulary, and an approach with children, beginners, or students stuck in a rut, that is rooted in empathy and understanding. I remember vividly how it feels to begin, and to have asked every question. Five years ago I expanded my teaching to include adults, and I have since worked at numerous studios throughout the city including Pioneer Works, DoClay, and Slow Burn. I have had the pleasure of working with people privately, and the delight of working with larger groups, including intergenerational and family classes. No matter the place, and all thanks to the people, I love what I do.
