About this Lister

Oscar Suh-Rodriguez is an NYC-based Chilean-American composer, guitarist, and music educator.

After acquiring his BFA in Jazz Performance from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in 2013, Oscar went on to tour the US and Europe as a sideman for various bands and artists. While working as a funk, rock, and blues player, he continued his solo guitar and jazz studies under guitarists Pedro Rodriguez, John Stowell, Gene Bertoncini, and Vic Juris. In 2015, he began to explore the concept of joining music composition and production. Then in 2016, he launched his indie label Kidokoro Records as a means of exploring this concept further and guiding younger independent musical artists. He received his MFA in Music Composition from Vermont College of Fine Arts in 2022, where he studied under Ravi Krishnaswami, John Mallia, and Carla Kihlstedt.

Currently, Oscar resides in Sunnyside, NY where he continues to present his compositional work, teach, perform as sideman to various artists.

Background and Expertise

I have fifteen years experience teaching private, one-on-one music lessons. I’ve been lucky enough to teach and explore with students of all ages–toddlers looking to build dexterity through guitar; teens looking to song-write, perform in bands, and audition for college; adults returning to the piano after decades.

In order to achieve the most educational and enjoyable lessons, I’ve developed a teaching style that is creative, flexible, and sensitive to each student’s personality. Throughout the years, I’ve learned that no two students goals are the same. Often, students want to “learn the guitar” or “play the piano,” without being able to express what that means exactly. The most important aspect of my job is to dive in with students and work to bring that hazy dream into focus. Thereafter, together we can follow the pathway through exercises, composition, listening, and plenty of practice.

Some students need help preparing for auditions or talent shows, while some just want to enrich their lives with a more casual experience in music. Some even just see an instrument as a fascinating object–which is exactly what brought about my start in music. It’s always fulfilling to discover each students personality and craft their music lessons to fit their needs.
