Job Description: Companion/Coach needed for a high-functioning young man with autism spectrum disorder and multiple food allergies.
Location: New York City, Upper West Side
About the client: Client is 25 years old. He enjoys reading, museums, exercising, playing guitar, video editing and creating video animations. He is verbal and friendly but could use some guidance socializing and to help him be safe in situations that could be unsafe in view of his food allergies.
Pay: $31 per hour
Hours:
Flexible. 4-5 hours on weekdays 7/7-7/21 to travel to Brooklyn from Upper West Side and 4-5 hours on Sundays. Some weeks may be less or more, depending on your availability and client’s schedule.
Job Requirements:
Experience as a caregiver for children or young adults with disabilities and unusual behaviors (written reference required)
Willingness to go with client (walking/public transportation/car) to interesting places, keeping in mind client’s food allergies.
Ability to walk at a sometimes rapid pace for 20+ minutes with client
An interest in mental health
Good communication skills both verbal and written
Ability to remain calm under pressure
College degree preferred
Job Responsibilities:
Traveling with Client to internship
Taking client on walks and accompanying him to classes and activities, running errands with him, etc.
Helping client organize his room
Accompanying client to social activities
Supporting the client in cultivating interests such as exercise and healthy eating
Providing companionship to the client while parents are out of the house
Understanding client’s food allergies and what foods/situations are not safe for him.
