Built in 2023, this 1200 sf, 2-story UNFURNISHED house sits on the 1.5-acre Mishpocha Woods Compound in Montopolis, right next to Roy Guerrero Park, surrounded by food and pollinator gardens and big oak trees. There are two other houses inside the fenced area--one occupied by your landlord, her husband and two dogs. Everyone who lives here is a writer, theater artist or generally creative person. Ages range from 28 to 68. We have hosted theater festivals and live music here. I (the 68-year-old landlord) was the general contractor for all the houses, using as many local materials as I could, along with tile from Dolores Hidalgo and expertise from Austin's Low Design Office.

Outside: you have one parking space inside the compound, plenty more on the street. Lots of garden space, if that's what you like to do. Cowboy pool with actual lifeguard chair. We have locked bike storage available.

Inside: open kitchen and living room with half bath, custom painted concrete floors, 2 sliding glass doors. Upstairs, full bath and huge airy bedroom with upstairs porch overlooking the rest of the compound. Brand new appliances, including induction stove, dishwasher, washer, dryer, fridge, and on-demand hot water.

Montopolis is a pedestrian bridge away from East Austin, and ten minutes from downtown. Roy Guerrero Park is huge and stunningly underused, especially compared the Barton Creek Greenbelt or Zilker Park. Easy to get anywhere by bike, and we all do that. The compound is located at the end of a street that dead ends into the park, 1.5 blocks west of Montopolis Boulevard.

About This Lister

I (Robin, she/her) am a 68-year-old writer/musician and general contractor currently working on two different theatrical productions that wouldn't have been possible if I didn't live at the compound! My husband is an investigative reporter who works at home. I build all the houses here myself, with a lot of skilled help. I had dreamed of doing this since I was a little girl on Long Island, and I have not been disappointed! I would be showing you the space, answering questions, bringing you sourdough bread and just generally taking an interest. We often have big gatherings here (from Passover seders to impromptu cocktails to shows). My two adult daughters and one granddaughter visit as often as possible. It's not what you'd call an introverted place, but you would have lots of space to yourself.

Rental requirements

I'm open to a lease from a few months-2 years, with the understanding that it's unfurnished. One month's rent security deposit ($2100). No more than two tenants--with its wide-open plan, his place wouldn't work for roommates, but couples have loved it. NO PETS--because we have two dogs (and four chickens) already, one of whom is freaked out by other dogs. Our dogs have the run of the compound, so prospective renters should A: enjoy the company of dogs, and B: be conscientious about opening and closing the gates.
