This cozy 2+ bedroom, 1 bath house is nestled at the foot of Mt. Beacon. If you’re an art and nature lover, this is the perfect spot for you! The house is located at the top of East Main Street in the charming city of Beacon. You’ll be just a 5-minute drive or a 20-minute walk away from the shops and restaurants downtown. A free loop bus can take you to Dia Beacon, Main Street, and the MetroNorth train station. From our porch, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Newburgh. And guess what? You’ll have easy access to miles of hiking trails just up the street. Hikers pass by our house all year round, thanks to one of the nicest trails in the Hudson Highlands that follows a bubbling creek and leads to a beautiful reservoir.
The house has an open floor plan on the first floor. The spacious kitchen is fully equipped with all the essentials you need to cook up delicious meals. You can even pick fresh produce from the backyard or buy it from the Farmer’s Market on Sundays. There’s a new induction stove that cooks efficiently and cleanly, and a dishwasher. The original cedar wood floors give the house a warm and inviting feel. Just a heads up, some of the flooring is a bit worn and could be a splinter hazard for bare feet.
Upstairs, you’ll find a primary bedroom with a California King Select Comfort bed (adjustable mattress firmness on each side). There’s also an adjacent bedroom that could be used as an office or a baby’s room. Right now, there’s a desk and printer in this room, but it can be easily reconfigured to suit your needs. Downstairs, there’s a second full bedroom with a twin bed.
The bathroom is on the first floor and has a bathtub/shower, a sink, and a toilet with a bidet seat. There’s a wall AC unit that keeps the downstairs cool, and a window AC unit upstairs. We have super-fast Verizon Fios internet with wifi coverage throughout the house.
Oh, and there are some other cool amenities too! There’s a garage, a private, fenced backyard with a gas grill and outdoor eating area, flower/vegetable/herb gardens, a tool/garden shed, and a full-sized washer and dryer in the basement.
The house has a few steps to get to the entrance, and it’s on two floors. We’re on a mountain, so there’s a lot of walking up and down hills. A car is recommended, but you can also get around by bike, foot, or car service.
We’ve lived here for the past 12 years, so it’s really lived-in and full of charm. Some parts of the house will be closed off to store our stuff, but the rest of it is yours to use. The decor is a mix of different styles, with original artwork by our family and friends, and a huge collection of records. We have a vintage sound system in the living room with a record player, CD player, and even a cassette player!
Beacon is a great place to live. It can get a bit touristy on weekends, but during the week it has a small-town feel and a friendly community that’s easy to plug into. You can cool off at the pool at University Settlement, hike the trails on Mt. Beacon, stroll down Main Street, catch a movie at the Beacon Theatre, and enjoy sunsets over the Hudson River. All of that is within walking distance of your house for the summer.
We’re a family of three. We’ve been in Beacon for over a decade and are embedded in the community. Anna is a grant writer for arts nonprofits and a dancer who teaches senior citizens. J is a music teacher, composer and musician. Our son is going into the 11th grade at Beacon High School.
