We have an opening in our shared studio space right off the Morgan L stop in Bushwick and are looking for a visual artist, photographer, designer, or other creative person with primarily desk-based work to share it with.
The overall space is about 400 sq ft, with a partial wall down the middle that divides it into two halves. We have large factory windows that let in great light all day and keep it cozy in the winter, and we have AC for the summer. We keep ~100 sq ft of the studio open so that people can do photo shoots, hang up work for studio visits, document work on white walls, or work more freely while they're in the space (we just ask that it be cleaned up before you leave for the day). We use a shared Google calendar to reserve time so that when you're in the space, you can be there by yourself, which is helpful for studio visits, photo shoots, and other meetings. We also have a shared mini-fridge and cleaning supplies, and a shared sofa within the space. The building has 24/7 access, a slop sink by the bathrooms, and freight elevator that you can request to use (by contacting the super) during daytime work hours. Our studio is on the 2nd floor, accessible by stairs.
Within one half of the overall studio, we have an opening for someone whose work is primarily desk-based. You'll be on the same side as the shared zone, and will have space on shared shelves, a desk that you can use while you're in there, and a wall that you can use to hang up your work.
We'd love to have someone join us for at least 6 months to a year, as we try not to have too much turnover within a year, but this is a sublet, so you would not need to be on the lease. We ask that people not use any fumes (ie oil paints) or excessive dust in the space, but otherwise we're open to a range of practices. Feel free to reach out with any questions about the space!
I'm a writer and artist whose work is primarily sculptural and installation-based. I've been subletting and renting this studio for the past five years or so. The other artists in the space are painters, photographers, and designers. We are all friendly and communicative, and try to be flexible to accommodate everyone's schedules and practices while maintaining a clean and supportive space that everyone can use as much as they need to.
To schedule a visit to the space, please be in touch and we will coordinate a viewing time.
Once you confirm you'd like to sublet the space, we'll ask for a one-month security deposit that can be used to pay your final month of rent, plus the first month of rent. We'll also share our communal agreement for use of the space.
Before people leave the space, we ask that they give us at least 4-6 weeks' notice and help us find a new subletter for their spot.
