THE NEIGHBORHOOD:
We are in the 'Chinatown' end of the neighborhood known as Sunset Park. Our very clean, pet-free and smoke-free brick home is on residential 60th Street off 6th Avenue. The area is mostly low-rise and low-key, yet has nearly every amenity, is convenient to Manhattan, is the most ethnically and culturally diverse neighborhood in Brooklyn, and is a good value. 60th Street at 6th Ave in the quieter southern end is even more convenient to Manhattan than the pricier 40's due to the express trains at 59th St, and easy access to the Gowanus Expressway entrance at 65th St if you have a car (15 mins drive to Manhattan's financial district via the Gowanus Expwy and the tunnel). Check out the NYC ferry schedules, for trips from 58th Street pier to the Rockaways, Dumbo and Wall Street.
Dozens of restaurants, plus food markets etc. on the commercial avenues of 8th Ave and 5th Ave. There is a (small) weekly Farmers Market on 4th Avenue at 60th Street. Foodies love the ethnic enclave of Sunset Park! The park called Sunset Park is 16 short blocks away, a very nice 15-minute walk or jog along brownstone- and rowhouse-filled residential 6th Avenue to this popular park on 44th Street with its expansive views of the harbor. Ferry service to Wall Street from the Brooklyn Army Terminal pier on 58th Street (brooklynarmyterminal.com). You can walk north Bush Terminal Piers Park which is a sublimely serene waterfront park, or you can walk south to the parks, harbor piers, movie theater and even more restaurants and bars in Bay Ridge. Or, take the R-local train which travels under 4th Ave north to Park Slope and Gowanus for all of their amazing places. And in the other direction, the N-train goes right to Coney Island.
Our part of Sunset Park is a good area, not fancy, with row house, limestone and brownstone blocks, nice in a classic old-Brooklyn way. 8th Avenue is the commercial heart of Chinatown with Asian restaurants and shops, and a large Asian supermarket. Fifth Avenue in the 50's of Sunset Park is also very vibrant, with assorted shops both ethnic (Central America, South American, Mexican, Arabic, Asian) and traditional (e.g., Greek diner at 57th), neighborhood shopping e.g. banks, bagels, laundromats, and many mom/pop retailers as well as chains. Opera lovers have always come to 60th Street to see the professional Regina Opera Company at the gorgeous Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, right up the block. Sunset Park (the neighborhood), which has long been the most ethnically diverse of Brooklyn's brownstone neighborhoods, has also become home to artists, techies, and creatives. Live music, shopping and restaurants can also be found at Industry City (industrycity.com).
My retired mother-in-law Antonia on the first floor, who has owned the building for over 50 years, in an avid gardener. The rear view from the apartment includes her private, spectacular Tuscan garden down below. She was a farmer in Italy before moving to Brooklyn. The 3rd floor resident who has loved living here for the past five years is an editorial assistant/ proofreader working hybrid, and also a professional musician (out of the home). Although the most recent resident of this 2nd floor apartment was a software engineer, former residents over the years have included writers, editors and artists. Antonia's two sons and two daughters-in-law help her manage the house, and we are always reachable. We will be showing the apartment beginning this weekend Jan. 24, and next week, by appointment.
Minimum income of $98K; one month security deposit plus first month's rent due at lease signing. Flexible start date. Please write to tell a little about yourself (and any other intended occupant, if any) and confirm you meet the required income. Please note, no smoking, pets or animals of any kind at all are permitted due to owner's allergies; and traditional bicycles are not permitted due to risks to the beautiful lincrusta stairwell, although a folding bicycle will be OK. We are seeking someone friendly, kind, and cooperative (it will be like your own 80+year old mom or nonna is living right below you) and who lives a clean, quiet lifestyle. Good experience as a renter is important. Although it is a one-bedroom, and the apartment is appropriate for those who require only one sleeping room/1BR apt, alcoves off the kitchen in row houses are great for many purposes: art studio; library; storage; yoga; dining; and of course as pictured here, for study/home office, see photos. Thanks for your interest in a one-bedroom+ apartment with incredible space, flow, light, and beauty, for your appreciation and care of the architectural details found in older building, for understanding this apartment is above an elderly immigrant homeowner, for your willingness to embrace cultural diversity, and for expanding your horizons to Sunset Park!
