Set back on a mountain and hidden away up a long driveway off a rarely traveled country road, our spacious two-story 1920’s farmhouse offers a wonderfully secluded and peaceful getaway to watch winter unfold. Nestled on 25 acres of undeveloped land, you can expect not to be disturbed by any sights or sounds of the outside world other than the occasional hooting of barred owls and calls of coyotes in the 500+ acres of NY state forest that directly border our property.
This house would be perfect for a couple or a pair of couples looking for a lovely, romantic woodsy getaway or a great resource for writers or artists who might need a quiet retreat to do some serious work. Five or six people could easily live comfortably here.
The house feels especially magical in the winter. The cozy living room features hardwood floors and relaxing seating around a fabulous wood stove. Writers and book lovers take note: throughout the downstairs rooms, there is an extensive library of books about art, geography, poetry, history, and philosophy to enjoy. There is a dining room and a full kitchen with a large refrigerator and all the basic appliances (gas stove, coffee maker, grinder, toaster, electric tea kettle, food processer). Upstairs, there is a washer and dryer for laundry. There are bathrooms on both floors and for your added relaxation, there are two bathtubs for soaking. Hot water is on demand and basically endless.
In the morning and afternoons, the spacious living room is flooded with light from the south and west. Sunsets here are phenomenal, lingering over the mountains in the distance. Deer, bunnies, barred owls, and red foxes can often be seen here year round. Outside, there’s an outdoor fire pit for gathering and entertaining guests.
On the ground floor, there is one large, sunny bedroom with a king size bed. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms we use as offices, both of which feature desks and some bookshelves, a printer, etc. One of the offices has a futon that can be used for sleeping and there are four air mattresses that can also be pulled out for visitors. There is a third loft-like upstairs bedroom that is great for stretching, yoga, dancing, or just hanging out.
AVAILABILITY: The house is available for the months of February and we are flexible for the first half of March. Let us know what works for you!
LOCATION: The house is surrounded by NY state forest and hiking trails, but is only an 8-minute drive into the town of New Lebanon, NY, the place of origin of the communal spiritualists, The Shakers. Their spiritual home, Mt. Lebanon, featuring dozens of extant and well-preserved examples of Shaker architecture, is a 5-minute drive away. Just across the border in Massachusetts is the Hancock Shaker Museum, a Shaker community preserved intact and a network of hiking trails.
Larger towns like Chatham (20 minutes), Hudson, Albany, and Great Barrington, MA (all 45 minutes) are nearby, too.
RENT: $700/week, $2200/month. Rent includes the cost of firewood, heat, and blazing fiber optic internet. Trash/recycling pick up and driveway plowing separate.
We are a queer couple – a musician/writer and a filmmaker – both with activist backgrounds. We love hosting large gatherings in our extended community of friends in NYC, the Hudson Valley, and beyond. It has been a constant joy to wake up living in this house each day and we have had many memorable occasions here with friends. Winter work has taken us away from the Northeast for the past several years. We would very much be open to developing an ongoing subletter arrangement with the right person or people who might want to use our lovely home to relax or make art together through the coming years!
No smoking indoors. Lease agreement and $500 security deposit for damages or early cancellation. Zoom interview to meet required.
