Weekly, online, one-hour long writing sessions with a different theme each week. Sessions begin with a creatively -focused meditation and continue with the offering of an imaginative prompt which could take the form of a reading, task, piece of music, or visual stimulus. We typically write for between five to fifteen minutes at a stretch and enjoy four generative prompts. There is no pressure to share work and all are welcome at 'The Write Owls'.
'Write Owl' workshops are led by London based educator and writer Emma Silverthorn. Emma has been writing since she was very small, and graduated from the Goldsmiths Creative and Life Writing Masters in 2007, she has been teaching since 2011. She has written extensively for 'The London Economic' amongst other publications. In 2021 she co-founded literature and theatre-in-education company 'Spot-Lit Education' with fellow teacher Laura Williams. You can purchase Emma’s first non-fiction book 'Roaming Wild' wherever you buy your books and stay up to date with Emma's latest writing via her newsletter 'After the Fact' found on Substack. She is currently working on a novella.
The Write Owls was founded in Spring 2025, though it was brewing for many years before this. We are inspired by Julia Cameron, Austin Kleon, Tricia Hersey, CA Conrad, Hanif Kureishi, Deborah Levy, Melissa Broder, Brad Listi and the practice of Zen Buddhism. While Emma, who leads most workshops, holds a Creative and Life Writing Masters from Goldsmith's University the Write Owls is not a craft class but rather an opportunity to free-write, unblock, and access meaning and memory through experimental creative exercises.
