Specialists are responsible for helping campers in their workshop navigate through the Independent Work program area over the course of the summer. This includes guiding campers through designing, planning, developing, and constructing their original projects. Specialists are responsible for creating supplemental resources to help campers move through their independent project, monitor campers progress, and efficiently order materials to keep their shop stocked with both fundamental materials as well as niche materials needed for individual camper projects. In addition to stewarding the Independent Work program area, Specialists also run 1-2 orientation workshops at the beginning of the camp session to introduce campers to their spaces, learn how to engage with the shop space and tools safely, and gain basic skills to be able to utilize the shop.
Specialists will have the support of at least one Instruction Oriented Counselor collaborating with them to host the workshop space. The relationship between Specialists and Staff Assistants is one of mutual support and learning, in which responsibilities for maintaining the space, tracking Independent Work, and supporting Campers is shared. Most Staff Assistants are either former campers or Beam Center NYC youth employees and have basic skills in the workshops.

When Specialists are not hosting campers in their workshop, they will hav additional responsibilities pertaining to the general upkeep and operation of camp including but not limited to: participating in the execution of the Beam Project alongside the Project Director and all other support staff on a need basis, camper village support and day off coverage, event production after dinner, luggage assistance at the beginning and end of camp sessions.

Folks who join us at camp work 6 days per week, their salary is paid out biweekly, and meals and lodging are provided for the length of the contract.

About Us

Beam is a unique summer camp for the fine and manual arts where each summer campers ages 9-17 collaborate on a spectacular project. Our mission is to help kids explore what it means to make things with their own bodies and brains, and how that creativity is relevant and applicable to everything in their lives. They transform ideas into artifacts, and personal achievement into community success. They also have a lot of fun! The centerpiece of the program is the Beam Project. Each summer Beam commissions a unique, large-scale collaborative endeavor that campers and staff produce and enjoy.
