Clear communication helps everywhere. Where do you need it? Where are you stuck? Whether you’re working on a book-length manuscript, polishing a pitch deck, or looking for recurring support to make sure newsletter copy is snappy and error-free, let’s talk!
I want to discuss your project with a need for one-time or ongoing editorial support that might look:
-developmental editing
-line editing
-copy editing
-proofreading
-script analysis
-fact checking
-generalized feedback
-writing
-reporting
I’ve worked across digital and print environments and believe that anywhere text appears presents an opportunity to engage with readers and express a concise message. I want to help you do that.
We'll start with a 15-30 minute call to clarify your editorial needs and process, and we’ll talk about your project, budget, and timeline. If you’re not sure where to start but have the feeling that an editor or editing process is somewhere in there, we’ll focus on defining that need. If you already know exactly what kind of read or editorial need you’ve got, start there and send along any preliminary materials.
Hi! I’m Ian — and editing, to me, is the collaborative side of writing; It’s where we bring in specialists with expertise before our writing goes on to its intended audience.
Recently, I was helping a friend with developmental editing related to a braided essay. The experience had me thinking: I love doing this! And all those years proofing and reading and reporting and writing ... they’ve made me pretty good at it! I should find more ways to do it.
Other passions of mine include looking for mushrooms and dry stone walling.
I’m an editor and writer with over a decade of experience working for magazines and publishers in different staff roles and freelance configurations. My work has been for small and scrappy nonprofits with only a handful of staffers as well as multinationals with offices around the globe (Apple, New York magazine, Texas Monthly, n+1, and The Nation to name a few). My experience has helped me understand the ways scale can influence the editorial process, and I hope that it will help me understand and meet your editorial needs. I read widely and have a flexible and genre-agnostic approach to editing and writing.
