Neighborhood

Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn

Woman and small, feisty dog offer a furnished room on a month-to-month basis. Ideal for someone transitioning to the city or between situations. But, if it proves to be truly a good fit, open to long term as well. Deposit, $1300/mo + $250 includes utilities, once-a-month housekeeper, shared incidentals (toilet paper/dish soap/trashbags etc).

The Location
Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. Steps from the Bergen F/G (so very convenient access to BK and Manhattan), and at least two CitiBike stations. Butchers and bakeries holding strong from the days when this was an Italian neighborhood (this is the neighborhood from the movie Moonstruck), cobblers, cheese shops, gyms, a YMCA with a pool, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, mostly small independently owed businesses, but also a Trader Joe's. There is street parking, and alternate side parking on most streets is once a week instead of twice.

The Building
This is a third floor walk up above a shop and a family that have been in their apartment for 30 years. It's on the funky side - not all the angles are 90 degrees, and the neighbors keep stuff on their landing, including a dusty ceramic swan. It's on a small (one-lane, one-way) commercial (busy) street (so traffic noise) and near a middle school (kid noise). Total noise insulation between us and the second floor neighbors, and no shared walls, but some street noise. The landlord is responsive and a nice guy, but I largely DIY. The family downstairs is always home, so while there is no door man or package room, delivery people always ring both bells and someone always answers the door to receive packages.

The Apartment
Technically a 3 bed, 1 bath, my bedroom is in the back and your bedroom and a room I use as an office are in the front, separated by a large living room with plants, a table and chairs, couch and TV.
The kitchen has a new fridge, a gas stove, microwave, convection oven, toaster, pots and pans and gadgets and gizmos. No dishwasher.
Bathroom has tub with shower, fancy Toto bidet seat, skylight.
The laundry situation is laundromats/drop off wash & fold, and a 3rd-world washing machine good for delicates or emergencies and portable dryer.
Hardwood floors, Verizon Fios wifi, window unit ACs, and steam radiators but with in-unit thermostat. An astounding 4 different vacuum cleaners. There is compost, trash, and 2 recycling bins, in accordance with local law and custom.

The Room
The room is medium sized, approximately 10.5’ x 11.5’, faces the street, and is furnished with a full sized bed (high enough for storage, including suitcases, underneath), bookshelf, desk/chair/lamp, clothes rack, dresser, large full length mirror, window AC when seasonally appropriate, small fan, insulated window shade that can be light filtering or blackout (although not 100% but pretty darn dim). The landscapes on the walls are from the Severance Season 2 set dec sale.

About You
The one thing I feel strongly about: You should please pee sitting down regardless of your physiology and close the lid before you flush the toilet. Please clean up after yourself promptly. Please communicate openly without defensiveness or passive aggression. I prefer that people aren't over a lot - kindly disclose if you have a romantic partner. An older person would probably be best (30+), but I'm open to younger people with older souls. The rent should be manageable for you, and not a stretch or big lift.

About This Lister

I am a single, middle-aged, white, queer, omniverous, cis female leftist, but I'm not that serious about it. I don't date or have people over. I work in TV production, and often work from home depending on the job I'm on. I wake up at 6:30 and go to bed at 10. I like going to the theater, I listen to NPR. I have a therapist. I ought to eat more at home. I clean the hair out of the drain every time and do dishes promptly. I hate dust and hair, but it's a struggle, hence the vacuums.
The dog is a 5 1/2 year old 13 pound long haired dachshund named Tiny Man. He's very fearsome and a mighty hunter, but he also wears a bowtie and sleeps a lot. He gets riled up and barks about twice a day (around 10am and 6pm) or if there is a percieved security threat (there has never been an actual security threat). He does have a really big bark for such a tiny guy. He's fascinated by the subway, which he's convinced is somehow actually under the street. He might be a little uncertain about you at first, but comes around pretty quick and wants to sit on the couch with you if you're wiling. I take him to work with me when I do go in. He doesn't like to be left alone, and I put out a pee pad for him if no one is going to be home. So we want to be transparent about all that.

Rental requirements

Tell me about yourself and your plans - are you moving to the city and need a place to land while your look for a place, are you in town for work, do you need to live somewhere while you are renovating your apartment, etc. How long do you anticipate staying.
Please provide some documentation of your financial situation and personal references from roommates or landlord or similar.
A $500 deposit, and $1550 rent/utilities/incidentals are required up front, due on the 1st of the month, and payable by cash or Zelle.
Happy to show you the room in person, or FaceTime/Zoom. I'm currently pretty flexible.

Pets Policy

If you have a dog that we can meet in person in advance, and they're compatible with my dog, I would be open to that. A fish or a bird or a rodent would be ok. But no cats, my dog would go nuts and it would be stressful for everyone.
