A furnished artist’s cottage built in 1930 as a live/work studio, located just outside the village of Woodstock in one of the area’s most historic creative corridors.
LIVING
The house centers around a dramatic double-height great room with soaring ceilings, a working wood stove, and decorative fireplace, and a large north-facing painter’s window that fills the space with changing natural light throughout the day.
A balcony loft with built-ins overlooks the room below and serves as an additional sleeping area, reading nook or writing perch.
The home is fully furnished with antiques, folk objects, and collected pieces, creating a warm and character-rich environment that reflects the sensibility of its artist owner and the region.
SLEEPING
The house can comfortably accommodate a couple, small family, or a small group of creatives.
• Primary attic bedroom with king-size bed
• Balcony loft sleeping area overlooking the great room with full bed
• Main floor room currently used as a study/library/parlor that can be arranged as an additional bedroom if desired
There is one bathroom, finished in deep lacquered red.
KITCHEN
The eat in kitchen is evocative of mid 20th century Americana and is painted an earthy ochre color, and is appointed with mostly vintage and handmade items. Electric stove, refrigerator, and washing machine are located in the kitchen (very European), the clothes dryer is located in the studio, and is accessed via a back door out from the porch to a deck that connects to the studio door.
STUDIO
Behind the house is a 224 sq ft detached fully whitewashed studio with two entrances — a front door and a screen door opening into the back garden.
This bright, flexible space works beautifully as:
• artist studio
• writing room
• summer sleeping porch
• yoga or meditation room
The studio does not have plumbing or dedicated heat and is best suited for summer use. It can also be delivered empty as a white studio space.
OUTDOOR LIVING
The property offers multiple outdoor areas for enjoying summer in the Catskills.
• Wraparound front porch perfect for morning coffee
• Rear deck and fenced garden for outdoor meals and barbecues
• Chiminea fire area for summer evenings
Deer regularly pass through the yard, and hawks circle overhead.
LOCATION
The house sits within a historic pocket of Woodstock’s artistic community.

IDEAL FOR
This home is best suited for:
• artists or writers
• creative couples
• small families with behaved children
• those seeking a quiet summer retreat with character and history
It offers both proximity to town and a sense of rural refuge.
My name is Josh Tierney, and I’m the owner and steward of the house. I divide my time between Woodstock and NYC, and this cottage has become both a home and a creative refuge.
I’m also a working artist under the name James Marilyn, and the house reflects that sensibility. It’s filled with antiques, collected objects, books, and pieces gathered over many years. The home was originally built nearly a century ago as an artist’s studio, and I’ve tried to preserve that spirit while caring for the property.
Professionally, I work in the creative industries and have spent much of my career working across design, culture, and storytelling. The house has always been a place for reflection, reading, writing, and making things.
Woodstock has a long history as an artists’ community, and this little corner of town still carries that feeling...quiet, creative, and connected to the landscape.
I’m looking for summer renters who will enjoy the home in that same spirit while I'm traveling this summer: people who appreciate character, creativity, and summer in the Catskills.
Flexible Summer Rental -- stay June through September to see Woodstock in it's full glory from young summer through early fall to see the first of the foliage (autumn arrives to the Catskills earlier than it does in NYC, it is a different climate), or stay just for high summer.
First month and one month security due at signing.
Can be flexible depending on interest. Will need all normal documentation and reference(s).
no large dogs. No exotic pets (reptiles, etc.) Cats and small dogs under special consideration.
