My lovely roommate is moving up the property ladder, so I'm looking for someone to take over her lease with the option to renew in March.
Your room:
It'll be unfurnished except for a built-in clothes shelving unit that came with the apartment. The room has tall ceilings and huge windows that let in a lot of light, especially because there's no building on the other side of the road. They're well-insulated, so when closed are great at keeping the room quiet and peaceful. That includes the noise of the nearby train, which my roommate says she doesn’t notice. The windowsill is low and large enough to be used as a bench (that's what I do!) or for additional storage. There’s central AC in your room and throughout the apartment.
The apartment:
This is a two-bedroom apartment in a four-story new build with about a dozen other units. We're on the second floor. The building feels new; the walls, windows, and ceiling are all well-insulated, so we rarely hear our neighbors. There's a virtual doorman and we have a control panel that can access a camera and microphone looking out from the front door, which lets us speak to people outside. The building has a basement with various amenities: Extra toilets, storage rooms for rent, a small gym, and a washer and dryer. We have access to a large roof with amazing views of Brooklyn and Manhattan.
The kitchen is newly equipped. It has a dishwasher, oven, a large microwave, four gas burners, and a spacious fridge/freezer. There’s a single shared bathroom. The shower has good water pressure and stays hot for a long time. We haven’t tried taking a bath, but you could. There’s a bidet attachment on the toilet.
The living room is cozy, with one exposed brick wall and large windows that let in a lot of natural light. One of those windows opens fully to allow access to a semi-private terrace. You can also access the terrace via a sliding door in my bedroom. This terrace is wonderful. It's spacious, gets direct sunlight, and overlooks a side street. There aren’t any buildings opposite, so it feels really open. We've got a table and chairs and some plants out there. (Including a jalapeno plant that seems on the way to making some fruit!) So does the other unit with terrace access. They also have a grill. I've only seen a single person from that unit use the terrace, which makes it feel even more private. (That person is absolutely lovely, too.)
The apartment will be mostly furnished. A few things, like the black coffee table, are my roommate’s. The rest, including the sofa, we bought together. I’m open to discussing with you how you want the shared space to look. If you’re bringing your own furniture, we can make space for it, within reason; if you’re coming without anything, I can buy my roommate out of our shared things and/or we can fill the space together.
Location:
Our roof overlooks the Kosciusko J train stop; the station entrance is a minute away. The apartment is also 0.4 miles from the Myrtle Av M/J stop and 0.9 miles from the Dekalb Ave L stop. There's a large Citibike station right outside the apartment, and we're a block or two away from several helpful bus lines, including the B38.
The J train means easy access to the Trader Joe's near Delancey/Essex. We're also a <10 minute walk away from several other supermarkets, including a Foodtown and 24/7 Mr Kiwi. Our nearest external gym is Gates Blink, which is also a 10-minute walk away, or one stop on the J. There’s a 24-hour laundry opposite us.
This is an amazing location that gives you easy access to the best of Bushwick and Bedstuy — both during the day and at night. Maria Hernandez Park and Herbert Von King parks are both within walking distance, and you can get to Fort Greene park in 10 minutes on a bike (or on the B38). We’re near loads of lovely cafes, thrift stores, community spaces (for example, there’s a community garden a few minutes walk away that hosts events), bars, clubs, etc. The nearest library is a 5-minute walk.
The rent:
The room is $1350/month. That includes water but not other utilities, which have been about $80/month per person this summer. The apartment is well insulated, which keeps things reasonable. WiFi is another $40/month total, so $20 each. We pay together through an online portal.
About the apartment vibe:
This is queer-positive space. My roommate and I have a close, friendly relationship and I’d love to keep that vibe going forward. We hang out in the shared space together often and have gone out together many times. We let each other know when guests will be here, coordinate using the shared space with our friends, and have hosted multiple events together. We’ve worked hard to make the apartment a warm, welcoming place for visitors while remaining a comfortable, relaxing sanctuary for ourselves.
Ideally, you are also in your mid- to late twenties, are creative (either professionally or personally). You should be clean but be fine with the apartment looking like two people live there. My roommate and I deep clean once a month. I’m happy to discuss how you’d like to take care of chores going forward.
I’m a 26-year-old freelance journalist who grew up in the UK and moved to the city a few years ago. My work is fully remote; I usually work in one of the local cafes (or library) and don’t mind if you’re remote, too. Outside of work, I enjoy going to readings, shows (drag and theatre), dance parties (the apartment is walking/biking distance to basically every notable venue in BK), and movies. We’re in a bit of a cinema desert here, but there’s a Regal a few stops away on the J and you can walk or bike to more indie cinemas like Syndicated, Spectacle, BAM, etc. I like running and playing tennis — any racquet sport, really — and am always looking for more playing partners. I also write fiction and play the piano. I smoke weed but not inside. My pronouns are he/him.
You will need to provide proof of income (or have a guarantor). The security deposit is one month’s rent. We had to pay a small application fee, which you might also have to pay.
Move in is October 1. (We could potentially do as early as Sept 15 if necessary.)
I’m showing the room/apartment this week — from Wednesday 20th to Tuesday 26th. I can make almost any time between those dates work.
