Hello! I'm a 28yo medical student looking for a new queer-friendly roommate to share a 2-bedroom apartment with on the edge of Queens - a great fit for folks who need to commute into Long Island for work or school, but also like to regularly spend time in the city. My current roommate is moving out this month for school, and their bedroom will be available starting November 16th. Ideally looking for a year-long sublease, but also open to discussing alternate arrangements.
About the Room:
- Bedroom size is roughly 150 sq ft.
- Comes partially furnished with a standing dresser, queen-sized bed, and built-in AC unit.
- Rent is $1100 per month, plus an additional $100 per month for all utilities (including electric, wi-fi, gas).
About the Apartment:
- In addition to the two private bedrooms and one bathroom, the apartment features a large open common space that includes the living room, dining room/general free-use workspace, and kitchen (with shared fridge/freezer, microwave, gas range, oven, rice cooker, air fryer, and pantry; no dishwasher).
- Laundry and dryer are available in the basement and shared with the other units.
- Street parking adjacent to the apartment is free and typically plentiful.
- In terms of accessibility, while the apartment is on the first floor, the entryway features a landing with three steps, and access to the basement laundry is by stairs only (~20 steps).
About the Location:
- The building has a Queens County address but is located right on the border with Nassau County. Access to a car is recommended, but local options are available to commute by bike or foot.
- Public transit options are relatively limited but available: ~0.2 miles to nearest MTA bus stop (Q43 at Hillside Av/264 St), ~1.0 mile to nearest LIRR station (Floral Park), ~5.0 miles to nearest MTA subway station (F at Jamaica-179 St, transfer from Q43)
- The neighborhood itself is a quiet residential area of mostly family homes. The Queens side features a large South Asian population with a diverse array of supermarkets and restaurants. The nearest grocery store and pharmacy is around ~0.5 miles away.
About the Building:
This apartment occupies the first floor of a former single-family home that was modified to support three separate units with their own private entrances and living spaces. Besides the first-floor unit, there is a basement unit occupied by the landlord's elderly parents, and a second-floor unit occasionally occupied by other members of the landlord's family. The landlord's parents also maintain a thriving vegetable garden in the backyard. While their English is limited (mainly Chinese-speaking), they've been super friendly and regularly share their fresh produce during growing season. The landlord himself works nearby and responds very quickly to maintenance or work requests.
Limitations:
- Small groups of guests are welcome, but the landlord has requested no large parties as they are disruptive to our elderly neighbors.
- 420 friendly, but no smoking in the apartment.
I'm Wren (28yo, any pronouns) and I'm currently studying medicine at Hofstra University. I've been the main tenant on the lease for this apartment for the past three years, and I've really enjoyed living here! It's been a great place for rest and recovery while balancing chronic health challenges and school, and I'm hoping to find someone who'll appreciate sharing a similar home environment.
Personality-wise, I'm mainly a friendly introvert. While I enjoy doing fun activities with others, I'm also totally happy with everyone comfortably doing their own thing in a shared space. Overall, I value transparent communication as well as respect for the space and privacy of others. Some of my hobbies include hiking, crafts/DIY, video games, folk arts, and spending time in nature.
If interested, please reach out over email to introduce yourself and schedule a time for us to chat in-person or over video call.
If we both feel that things are a good fit, a photo ID and proof of income will be requested to share with the landlord for final approval. First month's rent will be due at the time of sublease signing.
While I love animals, I'm unable to live with furry pets (specifically cats, dogs, and rabbits) due to allergies :'( But open to discussing other types of pets on a case-by-case basis.
