Terreform ONE

New York City
Brooklyn Navy Yard, Brooklyn
$700-$800 / monthly class

Terreform ONE seeks an enthusiastic educator and designer to teach a NYC Dept. of Education-sponsored precollege design thinking course – HEA3AT – that emphasizes project-based learning, mentorship from industry leaders, and a focus on immersive, applied STEAM and design learning. The student cohort includes juniors and seniors hailing from local South Brooklyn high schools (many of whom come from underserved local communities and are underrepresented in the STEAM field), who have indicated an interest in exploring innovation in the sustainable environment and energy sectors.

This lead educator will be responsible for preparing class materials (adapting a pre-existing syllabus & class decks with the support of Terreform's education director) & reaching out to mentors and speakers (also with Terreform staff support). The instructor’s main responsibility is facilitating the course once a month (tentatively Wednesdays) at the Brooklyn Navy Yard from 8.30am -- 2.30pm (expected ETA 8am - 8.15am), meeting over the course of the school year (one orientation, eight classes, & one showcase for 10 total sessions – see dates below). There is a DoE teacher in every class, providing project support as students work as well as administrative assistance to meet all DOE regulatory and academic guidelines. Terreform also seeks to provide a college-age or older teaching assistant, so the applicant should be able to identify strengths of such an aide, delegate where appropriate, and manage the relationship.

Through group work students taking part in the year-long HE3AT program apply the concepts of design thinking and frontier technologies, taught throughout the program, to help solve environmental / energy challenges. The course will culminate in the creation / invention of a product – a digital prototype, accompanied by a research report – that highlights the possibilities for innovative solutions to pressing problems they identify in their local community. The course will focus specifically in the sustainable environment, energy, and transportation sectors (notably because this class is sponsored in part by the Con Edison Community Foundation).

Throughout the second half of the year, after the students work in teams to produce the prototype and report, the course culminates in a public final presentation to numerous NYC DOE, industry, and educational stakeholders. This showcase will emphasize the importance of storytelling, public speaking, and crafting a succinct portfolio based on the year-long documentation process.

The ideal candidate for this position should have prior experience in classroom teaching (having worked with high school students is a plus, but if your teaching experience is only college-level, you must be able to adapt to the younger student cohort); a willingness to learn about Terreform’s ethos and work – and relating it to syllabus content – is a must. This position provides valuable teaching experience and is ideal for people currently enrolled in or having recently completed a graduate teaching in design or education program with a focus on sustainability, though we welcome applications from more experienced teachers as well.
The tentative session dates are as follows (all dates Wed except Orientation & Showcase):

2025
○M 9/22: Orientation @ Kingsborough Community College
○10/29: Session 2 (first classroom date)
○11/19 Session 3
○12/17: Session 4
2026
○1/14: Session 5
○2/11: Session 6
○3/11: Session 7
○4/15 *or* 4/22: Session 8
○5/20: Session 9 (last classroom date)
○Th 6/11: Student Showcase: time & place TBD

This is a team effort, with strong support from Terreform staff, but the ideal candidate wants to lead in creating and executing the best program possible. They will have a robust background in design thinking process and a passion for sustainability, and can work under deadline to adapt the current syllabus & class decks to reflect Con Ed sustainability concerns (again, there is much course material already, so no academic content is being built from scratch). Hours outside class & faculty meetings will vary but should not exceed five hours a month (more likely much less).

Program Facilitator Responsibilities Include:

●Attend September orientation, facilitate eight daily class sessions once (1) per month from October 2025 - May 2026, and facilitate June class presentation.
●Review curriculum in advance of each session, assist lesson preparation by setting up materials and equipment
●Provide one-on-one and small group support to students as needed
●Distribute and collect student surveys to track academic progress over time
●Analyze student survey results and share findings with DoE colleagues
●Collaborate with DOE teacher to address issues that may arise for students and proactively recommend solutions
●Uphold program mission and principles with students
●Other administrative tasks as needed

Compensation:
● This position is paid according to the number of sessions, the fee for each being priced to account for prep & admin time outside the classroom.
● The fee is based on our grant from Con Ed, so there is very little room for negotiation. Depending on experience, the fee per class will range from $700 - $800/class (ie, month) for a total of $7000 – $8000 paid over the school year (via monthly installments).
● This is a 1099 / independent contractor position, so the educator is responsible for paying his/her own taxes.
