Looking for a roommate for a one-bedroom in my two-bedroom, two-bath apartment in Ditmas Park/Flatbush. The bedroom is on the small side, but the apartment itself is quite large and airy, with big east-facing windows in every room and a loft-style layout. The available room comes with its own private half bath, and there's a full shared bathroom downstairs that’s also used by guests.
The apartment is on the sixth floor of a new-ish elevator building. (But the apartment itself does have a set of stairs, FYI) The shared living space is huge — there's ample seating, a TV, a walking pad, and some basic exercise equipment. The kitchen is on the smaller side but does the job; I cook a lot and find it perfectly functional. If you're also big on cooking, we may need to coordinate timing, but I'm very flexible. I have a fully stocked kitchen setup, so it's especially great for someone who’s new to the city, in NYC for a few months, or looking for a temporary stay.
Upstairs, you'll find both bedrooms and your bathroom. There's also a small deck on the main floor — at the moment, my dog is the primary user, but with a little effort, it could definitely be turned into a great hangout space. The building also has a roof deck that’s nice for relaxing or socializing when the weather’s good.
A little about me: I’m a writer and editor who splits my time between working from home and picking up bartending/event gigs. When I say I WFH, I mostly mean from the couch or bed — the apartment isn’t really set up for someone who needs a dedicated full-time office space. You’re absolutely welcome to work from home sometimes, but just be aware that there isn’t a true desk setup unless you're comfy with a couch-as-office situation.
I host a party every few months, with smaller gatherings like dinner parties or casual hangouts maybe once a month. You’re more than welcome to do the same, within reason. Most of my friends are lefty media/politics types, creatives, and service industry folks — if any of that interests you or gives you a sense of the vibe.
Now for the real star of the apartment: my 13-year-old hound mix, Artemis. She’s under 50 lbs, friendly, and has adored all of my past roommates, guests, and family — but she does not get along with other dogs. She lived with cats in her previous home, but this apartment isn’t really set up for a litter box situation, so unfortunately no pets for the roommate. Artemis is energetic for her age but also very content to lounge around with me (or you) all day.
I’m trying something new and want to offer the option of a rent discount for someone who’s open to helping out with dog care — things like walks when I’m out for long stretches, or occasional overnight dog-sitting if I’m out of town. This is not required, just a bonus I’d love to discuss further if it’s of interest. Feel free to mention it in your email and I’ll explain more when we chat!
Rent includes: all utilities (internet, AC/heat), and household essentials like paper towels, dish soap, cleaning supplies, etc. I prefer to just keep all that stocked for ease. If you’re looking for a shorter-term stay, I can also provide sheets, towels, and anything else to help you get settled. The room has a full bed and currently a clothes rack and folding chair, which can be removed if needed. Roommates in the past have brought in small desks, dressers, etc., but anything larger likely won’t fit.
I’ve lived in this apartment for three years and, aside from the usual New Yorker gripes, I really love it. My past two long-term roommates were a couple from Europe who stayed for a year, and someone who moved from Florida for her first NYC apartment and lived here for a year and a half. In between, I’ve hosted friends, family, and friends-of-friends — so I’m open to a wide range of timelines, from a few weeks to indefinite. Just let me know what you’re looking for in your reply. That said, this isn’t a great spot for someone with a lot of their own furniture, as the common areas are already fully furnished.
The nearest subway is Newkirk Ave on the B/Q. If you’re not familiar with Ditmas Park, the area can feel a little out of the way at first, but the B/Q is a fast train line which makes for an easy commute. When I worked off Union Square, it was about 40 minutes door-to-door; one of my roommates studied at NYU and could get there in 30.
If you’re interested, shoot me an email with a bit about yourself and what kind of timeline you’re thinking. Happy to answer any questions or schedule a time to chat!
I'm a writer and editor, have lived in NYC for 10 years. Not really a homebody but been trying to save money so might be home more these days than I have been in the past. Generally though, am out a few nights a week and respectful of everyone needing some alone time in a shared living space. I am open to being friends or just cohabitating peacefully. Depends on the vibe!
Please be able to pay the rent. I'll want to write up a short lease agreement but nothing crazy.
