The setting:
The lake is right there - visible from the moment you step inside the house. Mornings on the deck (or down to the dock) with coffee, watching the birds put on a show (there's a stunning bald eagle that makes an appearance). Afternoons reading in the hammock chair or floating on the water. Evenings watching the light change over the lake, over the barbecue, with s'mores by one of the fire pits. Snip some herbs from the upper deck herb box, or cut fresh flowers from the wildflower garden bed (if the squirrels haven't gotten there first).

The property is just under a quarter of an acre, is well-maintained and the grounds are kept, while the lower lake landscape stays beautifully wild.

When you want to venture out: Peekskill is 20 minutes away, Cold Spring 25, Beacon 35. All three have excellent restaurants, farmers markets, independent bookshops, and galleries. The hiking is exceptional — the Depew Park trails and the Appalachian Trail loop at Canopus Lake are personal favorites. And then you come home to the lake.

This is an ideal home base for a couple or a small family looking for a quiet, restorative summer, or a few friends looking to test drive co-work/commune life - for people who want somewhere beautiful to slow down, but still have easy access to amenities and city life. Every time I came up, it would be a reset to my entire nervous system - so much so that a few years ago, we left our place in the city to live here full-time.
