Job Description:

We are seeking a patient, reliable, and supportive individual to serve as a Travel Trainer and Life Skills Coach coach for a disabled young man living with hydrocephalus and low vision. The primary focus of this role is to help him navigate the NYC subway system and support his independence around the home. He is already somewhat familiar with the subway lines but needs assistance becoming reacquainted with routes, stations, and routines to foster greater independence. Additionally, he will require assistance with some Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s). The Ideal candidate would be a patient, motivated individual with experience in travel training and ADLs who can provide thoughtful, supportive guidance to ensure the client builds travel skills safely, confidently, and effectively.

Responsibilities:
- Support client in navigating NYC streets and public spaces with awareness of surroundings, using travel tools or guidance as needed
- Train, model and prompt when/where needed, with the goal of stepping back and fading prompts to allow the client to problem-solve and build confidence
- Help the client safely cross streets and orient himself in uncontrolled environments
- Support client in planning travel routes and understanding his spatial relationship to his environment and to others
- Accompany client on subway and bus rides across the city, providing clear verbal guidance and reassurance in unfamiliar or crowded settings
- Assist with wayfinding and orientation at transit stations, including identifying correct platforms and exits
- Observe and informally assess progress over time, noting areas of improvement and/or ongoing challenges
- Assist in planning and executing a weekly schedule that includes work internships, physical activity, psychological counseling, appointments with friends, and non-work pursuits.
- Assist with activities of daily living to promote a healthy lifestyle, including: cooking, household chores, personal hygiene, money management, shopping, making plans with friends, and more

Ideal Candidate:
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities, including low vision (preferred but not required)
- Familiar with NYC public transit, especially the subway system
- Punctual, dependable, and comfortable navigating busy urban environments
- Strong interpersonal communication skills
- Patient, encouraging, and respectful of individual autonomy
- Experience working with people with disabilities
